Speaker
Reverend Tina Simson

About the Program

Consider the Goddess, a Mother’s Day Sermon. As we explore our monthly theme of pluralism, let’s look at how toxic patriarchy creates a challenging culture for families in our country and how embracing the qualities of the sacred feminine might be the answer.

About the Speaker
Rev. Tina Simson is Minister Emeritus from First Unitarian Church in Rochester, where she faithfully served for nine years as Minister of Spiritual Development and Pastoral Care. At present, she mentors and facilitates for UU Wellspring, has an active spiritual counseling practice and this year will once again assist the UUEA with our Soul Matters Small Group Program. Tina is an Interfaith Minister educated and ordained through One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in New York City, and holds a certification in Spiritual Counseling. She is an Associate member of the UU Minister's Association

New Yorker Discussion Group

For those who enjoy reading and discussing in-depth articles on current, significant US and international issues, the creative arts, personalities and more, the New Yorker Discussion Group offers the opportunity to stimulate the mind, hear multiple points of view, learn, socialize, and laugh a lot. The group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. for about 1.5 hours in the U.U.E.A. gathering room. There are no “required readings.” Each member reads any articles, stories, or poems that are of interest and at meetings, share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences (frequently relevant, occasionally irrelevant, and often irreverent). Sometimes one or more members has expertise on a topic, and sometimes the articles have information that is totally new to everyone.

All are welcome, but weekly attendance is not required. It’s good for the mind and a lot of fun.

About the Program

Late for the Sky
. Life is full of omens and worries, and yet our predictions rarely materialize in the ways we envision them, and are soon forgotten as life introduces new victories and sorrows. In 1974 the songwriter Jackson Browne encapsulated his forecasts and fears in an album called "Late for the Sky," but could not see the tragedies and triumphs ahead of him. What can this songwriter's story tell us about our own predictions for the future?

About the Speaker

John Snodgrass teaches Native American Religions at Canisius College, and is the author of "Genesis and the Rise of Civilization." He has been a guest speaker at numerous Unitarian Fellowships in Western New York, and lives in Buffalo with his wife and their four children.

About the Program

iChurch to weChurch: A Community with Love at the Center. Affirming the value of Pluralism in Unitarian Universalism means that each of us must move from an “iChurch” mentality to a “weChurch” model. What does this shift involve, and how can we become a place where all are truly welcome?

About the Speaker
Rev. Kristina Church grew up all over the country as an Air Force kid, spending most of her childhood and young adulthood in Anchorage, Alaska, which she still considers her hometown. After earning a Master’s of Science in Social Work at Columbia University, she pursued a career in social work before becoming a mother later in life. Rev. Kristina holds a Masters of Divinity degree from Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, Illinois, and serves as the ¾-time Settled Minister of the UU Congregation of Erie, Pennsylvania. She lives in Erie with her husband, Greg, their 13-year-old son, Rafael, and their labradoodle, Onyx! Her passions in ministry include climate and racial justice, religious education, and pastoral care. Personal interests include outdoor activities, music, theatre, and yoga!

Speaker
Reverend Craig Schwalenberg

Service Leader
Mary Moglia-Canon

About the Program

A Cooperative Game. Our spiritual theme this month is Interdependence. We probably all agree that Interdependence is im-portant. But does it actually mean? How does it operate in our daily lives? How do we get better at being Interdependent? As your Game Minister, I like to practice and learn with games. And Cooperative games are my absolute favorite type to play. The Cooperative Game we all play together is the most important game of all.

About the Speaker
Rev. Craig Schwalenberg is an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister raised in the Midwest, transplanted to New York (near the source of the Susquehanna). After 15+ years serving as a parish minister and interim minister, he has started a new community ministry as Your Game Minister— sharing the fun and wisdom where spirituality and play cross paths. His ministry is one of connections, storytelling, hospitality, and games. Per is a supportive member of the Liberal Religious Educators Association and an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Society for Community Ministers. Rev. Craig is co-author of the RPG social justice curriculum, Building a Better World. Rev. Craig lives in central, upstate New York with wife, Cheryl De-Decker, their dog, Harmony, and two cats, Pearl and Jasper.

This month’s theme: Interdependence

Stay after the service for a Cooperative Game Gathering!

After the service and social hour, please join us for a fun exploration of cooperative games with Your game minister. Find a new favorite game or role play DND! Learn why Cooperative games have become so popular in the past decade. Practice the spirituality of Interdependence around a table with friends old and new. Rev. Craig Schwalenberg collects cooperative games for every age and delights in sharing them with new players. Arts and Crafts Night for April will be moved to Sunday to take advantage of this fun time after service. Pizza Provided!

Speaker
Reverend Peter House

Service Leader
Jeff Maris

About the Program

We Should Always be Able to Say “I’m Sorry.” We are all taught as children to say “I’m sorry” when we have hurt someone else. As adults however, some of us have a harder time than others putting this lesson into practice. It’s never a mistake to say “I’m sorry” even if we believe we are in the right.

About the Speaker
Rev. Peter House is a 2000 graduate of Meadville Lombard Theological School. He has served as ministerial intern, and summer minister at the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, summer minister at First Unitarian Church in Rochester, NY, and has served since 2007 as the summer minister at the First Universalist Church of Rochester. During the year, Peter is a special education teacher working with 5th grade students. Peter and his partner, Michael Hannen, live in Rochester.

The Fibers of our Being, or, One Hundred Days in a Dress. Our globally interconnected existence shows up in the most intimate and surprising places, like the very clothing we put on our bodies. Let’s explore Interdependence and Inter-being with a deep dive into the international garment industry. How can we live our values through our fashion choices, and why does it matter?
