A Gift Greater Than Music - Kleinhans Music Hall During WWII

On February 25, 2024 Lauren Becker presented A Gift Greater than Music: Kleinhans Music Hall During WWII. Thoughts of Kleinhans Music Hall typically center around its illustrious architecture and world-class sound, and generations of Buffalonians have made memories here for over 80 years. Few remember, however, that for the first five years of the Hall’s existence, the country and the world were at war. Ed and Mary Kleinhans gave their money to build a "temple" where the community could gather and share the spirit of music, but from its opening night to the end of World War II, Kleinhans Music Hall was a refuge and shelter – literally a bomb shelter – to protect and nurture the very spirit of community itself. Join us as Kleinhans Archivist Lauren Becker shares an hour of stories and imagery from Kleinhans' war years as Buffalo's center for "diversion and hope.”
